In this project we chose a current topic we wanted to research and write about. The majority of the research process was looking for online sources where you could find relevant information. I think it would have been greatly helpful if we had a time for interviewing in this process though. After we collected background information we created an outline for our article and started writing. After finishing we critiqued each other until the article was ready to go. Last we split into exhibition groups and prepared for the exhibition doing things like prepping the website to prepping the room. Our final product was a website full of articles you can visit here.
This project showed me how much the media can control what people see, and if people are biased they can change the way someone sees the world. This has made me look much more cautiously at articles and cross referencing other sources. During the process of finding information this was very helpful because there were some historic dates on websites that were wrong when referenced it with other information. Though I learned not to trust all sources I also learned how important journalism is to sustaining democracy. People can’t vote fairly on someone who they don't know anything about journalism informs about the good and the bad so people can make informed decisions.
During this project I have gotten much better at reliable research, and descriptive writing. For my article I was doing a profile of the hiding places in the strater hotel. Because of this my writing, describing what the places looked like but not where they are, underwent lots of critique. Now that I have gone over my descriptions many times they work very well with my article. Reliable research has effected me in the past in a research paper a while ago I ended up using lots of false geographical information because I trusted a source too much. When we learned about bias I took that as another reason to check research and as I described above that ended up saving me in this project and maybe in future ones too.
